High-Speed Bearing Cooler

Ascend Performance

Greenwood, South Carolina

This closed-loop system was designed for cooling high-speed bearings in the manufacturing of yarn used in tires. These high-speed bearings required a new, thinner, cooling medium that has different heat transfer properties. This fluid is also much more expensive then more typical, glycol or water, cooling mediums. This led us to design a machine that was compact enough that it can be installed right next to the bearings that are to be cooled, thereby minimizing the amount of cooling fluid required to fill intervening piping and allowing the majority of the cooling piping to be filled with water. The skid based pumping system solution allows for higher versatility in placement, transportation, plant redesign and maintenance.

Project Goal

Design a compact, low profile turbine oil cooling system for cooling high-speed bearings.
